I Monti 07:34
I monti ci gettano addosso lunghissime ombre e stringono un cerchio di tristezza. La tramontana screpola le case e i rari passanti s'affrettano. Il gatto nero svicola. Domani il giorno potrebbe non tornare The mountains cast long shadows And draw a circle of sadness The cold north wind chaps at the houses And strangers pass by The black cat sneaks out Tomorrow the day may not return

Noch'ju v sadu u menja Plachet plakuchaja iva, I bezuteshna ana Ivushka, Grustnaja iva. Ranneje utro blesnet, Nezhnaja devushka Zor'ka Ivushke, plachushchej gor'ko, Sljozy kudrjami sotrot. In the night in my garden A weeping willow weeps, And she is inconsolable, the Willow, The sorrowful willow. The young morning will flash, A tender girl named Dawn Will wipe away with her curly hair The tears of the bitterly weeping willow.

Opa Tsupa 06:06
Me sem chora chavoro, Khelav rom majlacho, Oj andale mandale, E chora man astaren. Kas me astarav, Me mange asav, Samoi je chaj ni mangel, Voj manda nashel O opa tsupa So te mande chaje muka, Ti daj ka merel ako ni chele. Lumbaj , lumbaj, lumbalaj ajde ajde ajde, Lumbaj , lumbaj, lumbalaj ajde ajde ajde. I svirache ka chelel, Noj ni mangel te chelel, Oj andale mandale, Mudarela o devel. Ava Ruzha ava kel, Pa i tiro mek avel, Oj andale mandale, I svirache bashalel. I am a poor guy, One of the best dancers, The girls grab me to dance. Whomever I grab is glad, Only one girl doesn’t want to dance, She runs away from me. O girl, why are you making trouble for me? May your mother die if you don’t dance! Come on, come on, Come on! All the girls are dancing, But she is crying sadly, In my heart a fire burns. Come on, Rosa, come and dance, Then you’ll get married. Even the musicians are dancing. Whomever I grab is glad, Only one girl doesn’t want to dance, She runs away from me.

Elegia 06:08
What remains of you is a memory the time has turned the corn ears golden and burned the stubble on the fields reddened the vineyards and made the trees bare, put snow on the mountains and darkened the sea. But the time does not remember the corn fields only I remember and the taste of my remorse is bitter and burns my mouth. Elegy.

Hey crazy young boy, my mother is scolding me because of you! You are coming to the door, you are not being quiet - You are banging on the door because you want to see me You are coming to the window, you are not being quiet - You are breaking the window because you want to see me!

Maika i Sin 04:11
Ostavixhte I vech ne se vidyaxhme V'razdyala da zhiveem tiran ni os'di. I d’lgo, potaino, goreshto kopnyaxhme sosht edna pregr’dka Bog da ni dari. Ne byaxh do tebe kr’sta da podigna, ta m’kite ti m’nichko da oblekcha Stradaniya slomixha dushata ti pechalna, izd’xhnala zovyashta prokudeni detsa. Spi vechniya si s’n, maichitse ednichka, i znai, che v'tvoita oris ti ne be samichka. I left you, And we never saw each other again. To live in separation a tyrant sentenced us forever. And long, secretly, we longed for God to grant us with one more embrace. I was not next to you to lift the cross and alleviate your sufferings. The sufferings crushed your sad soul, expiring and calling your exiled children. Sleep your eternal sleep my only mother, and know that in your fate you are not alone.

Cedar 07:23

about

Based in Sydney, the six-piece ensemble Chaika take their name from the Bulgarian word for ‘seagull’. They create a beguiling and original sound-world, blending 4 female voices with Clarinet, Violin, Piano, Accordion, Double-Bass, Guitar and Percussion.

Chaika draws influence from folk traditions, jazz and classical music. Described as ‘cinematic, deeply touching and meditative’, as well as ‘exuberant, virtuosic and uplifting’, Chaika’s strength is the elusiveness of their style.

This is their second independent album release, which explores a rich collection of both traditional and original compositions.

From the quiet intensity of the title track 'I Monti' (Italian for The Mountains), to the frenetic virtuosity of 'Vreme Senvic', this album leaves no atmosphere unturned. Jazz mingles with Russian song throughout 'In My Garden at Night' and acapella numbers in Bulgarian and Hebrew are juxtaposed with the pensive instrumentals of 'Cedar' and grooviness of traditional Romani tune 'Opa Tsupa'. The languages featured are Bulgarian, Hebrew, Italian, Romani and English, all sung in a variety of ways ranging from sublime solos to 6 part harmonies.

Like their namesake, Chaika gently wander through foreign lands, through storms and through stories, emerging rich with experience and an enchanting tale to tell.

‘Beautiful! I love the way your pieces often abruptly shift gears, and how the textures change - how we're bopping along with an instrumental when suddenly we're into four-part female vocals… Most of all I love the soul with which you imbue your pieces’
- Martin Wesley-Smith (Australian composer)

‘Clarinet, accordion, violin & double bass all intertwine diversely & at times unpredictably giving Chaika a rich depth. … such a young & talented group of musicians’ – Eastside Radio, Sydney
